Turkey (Corum)

In the workshop on Democracy and Human Rights at Çorum Mehmetçik Anatolian High School, conducted under the project „Raising the conscious citizens of tomorrow; THE NECESSITY OF A NEW MULTICULTURAL DEMOCRATIC CULTURE,“ which is carried out by the European Union Ministry – AB Education and Youth Programs Center Presidency and supported by a grant from the European Commission within the framework of Erasmus+ under the project number 2020-1-DE03-KA229-077250_6, a workshop was held on October 27, 2022, with the theme of Democracy and Fundamental Rights and Freedoms of Citizens.

The workshop, which started with Ms. Lawyer Sümeyye İrem Ergün, assigned by the Çorum Bar Association, reading the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, continued with the students‘ questions. Ergün explained that democracy is a form of government based on the sovereignty of the people and answered the students‘ questions about democracy and human rights in their minds. She shared with the students what they could do if they encountered violations of rights in their daily lives and how to proceed in cases of human rights violations in the workplace.

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, declared on December 10, 1948, approximately three years after the end of World War II, and a milestone in the history of human rights, was published in the Official Gazette in Turkey on May 27, 1949, by the decision of the Council of Ministers. In this workshop attended by 90 students within the scope of this declaration, the most curious articles were as follows:

Article 5: No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment or punishment.

Article 7: All are equal before the law and are entitled without any discrimination to equal protection of the law. All are entitled to equal protection against any discrimination in violation of this Declaration and against any incitement to such discrimination.

Article 9: No one shall be subjected to arbitrary arrest, detention, or exile.

Article 11: 1. Everyone charged with a penal offense has the right to be presumed innocent until proved guilty according to law in a public trial at which he has had all the guarantees necessary for his defense. 2. No one shall be held guilty of any penal offense on account of any act or omission which did not constitute a penal offense, under national or international law, at the time when it was committed. Nor shall a heavier penalty be imposed than the one that was applicable at the time the penal offense was committed.

Article 19: Everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience, and expression. This right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers.
